The John Melvin University Millers opened up the 2024-2025 season with a home game against Louisiana Community Christian College at the historic Martin Luther King Jr Center in Crowley, Louisiana.
The Millers play an exciting style of basketball that is reminiscent of the Run and Gun Boston Celtics of the 1950s and 60s, rarely letting the shot clock run down and forcing their opponent to be able to run with them for 40 minutes. Creating an energized home crowd that helped push their Millers to an exciting come-from-behind victory.
JMU trailed the Crusaiders 44-41 at the end of the first half but they were not concerned. The Millers came out hot in the second half and battled in a game where the lead changed constantly until the end with the Millers taking the final lead with less than a minute to go in the game and would never give it back up.
JMU had some young players step up in big ways in their home-opening victory. Freshman Tayshaun Colomb was the Millers leader on the court, playing an astounding 33 minutes in the game and leading the starters in scoring with 14 points. The 5'6 PG also grabbed six rebounds and had six steals to help the Millers. Sophomore Richard Casler Jr tied for the leading scorer in the starting five with 14 points while having four rebounds and three steals. Freshman Joseph Kone came up big off the bench, going 2-3 from 3-point land on his way to scoring a team leading 15 points off the bench. As a team the Millers came up big on defense with 14 offensive rebounds and 17 steals in the game.
Coach Romel Bryant picks up his first victory as the Millers head coach with a 83-79 victory, and JMU starts the season 1-0. The Millers will next take the court on Saturday @ Southern University at New Orleans.
