The Miller baseball team swept nationally ranked Delgado CC in a doubleheader Wednesday evening at historic Kirsh-Rooney Field by scores of 5-1 and 3-2. The 23rd-ranked Dolphins fell to 33-13 while JMU upped their record to 33-13 in just their second season.
In game 1 JMU got on the board in the top of the second inning by a Dylan Jiminez double, followed by a towering homerun by Noah Watkins. The Miller bullpen came up big as Caleb Ougle and Kole Sonnier combined for 5 and a third innings of shutout relief. Sonnier and Watkins collected two hits a piece, while Andrew Ashby lined a home run in the fourth to put the Millers up 5-1.
In game two Noah Watkins got his 1st start on the mound this season. Watkins carried a No-Hitter into the 5th inning and worked 5.2 innings, giving up just up one run on 4 hits while striking out 4. Freshman Dane Mallon entered the game in the 6th innings with 2 outs and 2 runners on and got the Millers out of the inning with the 3-1 lead. Willy Flynn came in the seventh and promptly shut down the Dolphin rally with a ground ball and a strikeout to earn his record holding 4th save of the season. Watkins also drove in the go-ahead run with a triple to score Trevor Durr to put the Millers up 3-1 in the sixth. Gavyn Gary and Joe Teutone IV drove in the other two runs for JMU with timely hitting.
The Miller defense had no errors on the day to back up a gutsy performance by the JMU pitching staff.
JMU will be back in action Friday and Saturday in College Station, Texas to finish up the season.
