New Orleans, LA - Millers split the day against Nunez

Game 1 - John Melvin University takes the game 12-4

The Millers offense came out hot in Game 1, scoring 3 runs in the top of the first inning to take an early 3-0. Joe Teuton IV, Andrew Ashby, and Taylor Walters all picked up RBIs in the first inning. Nunez scored 2 runs in the 3rd inning but JMU got the runs back in the next half-inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Connor Pleasant and Trevor Durr. JMU broke the game open in the 5th inning when Taylor Walters doubled in a run and Cabet John Blanchard hit a Grand Slam in his first start of the season to bring the game to a score of 10-2. The Millers power surge would not end there, Andrew Ashby hit his first Home Run of the year with a 2-run bomb in the 6th to finish off an impressive day for the Millers offense, scoring 12 runs on 12 hits.

The JMU pitching staff got the job done in Game 1, led by Troy Morel who picked up his first win of the season. Morel pitched 5 strong innings in the start, giving up just 1 earned run and striking out 6 Nunez batters on his way to the Game 1 victory. Kade Massey entered the game in the 6th inning, striking out 2 batters; and Brody Smith closed out the victory in the 7th inning.

Game 2 - Nunez takes the game 7-6 in extra innings

Nunez started off Game 2 taking the lead in the bottom of the 1st inning with an RBI double and held the 1-0 lead until the 4th inning. The JMU offense stormed back in the 4th inning thanks to a 2-run double by Dylan Jimenez, followed up by an RBI double from freshman Gavin Dohmann for his first career hit, giving the Millers a 3-1 lead in the 4th. After a low-scoring first 3 innings, this would be the beginning of a Game 2 offensive surge. Nunez regained the lead on a 3-run Home Run in the 5th inning. JMU tied the game in the top of the 6th inning after Dylan Jimenez reached base on a single and Jonah Callais singled for his first career hit, Kole Sonnier would pick up 2 RBIs and tie the game at 6-6. The score would hold there until extra innings when the first batter of the inning for Nunez would hit a walk-off Home Run to end the game.

Freshman Garrett Walker made the first start of his career in Game 2. Walker gave the Millers 3.2 strong innings of work, giving up 3 earned runs and striking out 5 Nunez batters before exiting the game with the game tied 3-3 and earning the no-decision. Willy Flynn gave JMU 2.2 strong innings in relief, surrendering just 2 hits and striking out 3 before ultimately taking his first lose of the season after the walk-off.
