Game 1 - Southern Arkansas University Technical
John Melvin University opened the scoring up early when Trevor Durr singled in a run in the 1st inning to take a 1-0 lead. The Millers added another run in the 3rd thanks to a Kade Massey RBI single that scored Noah Watkins. The Offense broke the game open in the 4th inning when Taylor Walters and Trevor Durr both picked up RBIs and pushed the lead to 6-0. Noah Watkins and Andrew Ashby both picked up RBI in the 5th and 6th innings and Watkins (3), Connor Pleasant, Massey, Durr, and Walters all picked up stolen bases as the JMU offense exploded for 8 runs in the game.
The Millers pitching staff was led by Game 1 starter Peyton Ford. Ford carried a Perfect Game into the 5th inning of the 7-inning game before surrendering his first hit. The Miller starting pitcher threw 5 innings, striking out 6 batters, and allowing just 1 run before exiting the game with a 7-1 lead and ultimately picking up his first win of the season. Caleb Ougel made his pitching debut for the season, entering the game in the 6th and throwing a scoreless inning while striking out 2 batters. Moose Ortego finished off the Game 1 victory, throwing a scoreless 7th inning and also striking out 2 batters.
John Melvin University took the Game 1 victory by a score of 8-1.
Game 2 - Southwest Mississippi
JMU controlled the majority of Game 2 comfortably before surviving a 7th-inning surge from Southwest Mississippi. The Millers offense got started in the 3rd inning when Noah Watkins hit a double to left field, scoring Dylan Jimenez and Trystin Gilbert. 2 pitches later, Kole Sonnier hit a single through the infield that scored Watkins and gave JMU a 3-0 in the 3rd. The score held there until the 7th inning when the offense broke the game open and scored 4 more to push the score to 7-0 heading into the bottom of the 7th. Zayne Earl, Trevor Durr, Joe Teuton IV, and Andrew Ashby each picked up RBIs in the 7th inning effort.
Gavin LeBlanc picked up his first win of the season after giving JMU a masterful performance in the Game 2 start. Leblanc worked 5 scoreless innings, allowing just 2 hits, and striking out 11 batters before exiting the game with a 3-0 lead after 5 innings. Kade Massey entered the game in the 6th inning and threw a scoreless inning while striking out 2 batters to send the game into the 7th with JMU still leading 3-0. The Southwest Mississippi bats got hot in the 7th inning as they were able to string together 7 hits and score 6 runs off two Miller pitchers to bring the game to a score of 7-6 with 1 out and runners on 1st and 2nd. Freshman Garrett Walker picked up the first Save of his college career as he was able to finish off the Game 2 victory, picking up a strikeout of the first batter he faced and working a fly ball to center field to end the game the next batter.
John Melvin University picked up the Game 2 victory by a score of 7-6.
JMU will be back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Nunez CC for a doubleheader.
