Crowley, LA - John Melvin University splits their Opening Day doubleheader
GAME 1 - The opening game of the season started off looking all Millers. Noah Watkins scored the first run of the season and got the Millers on the board in the 1st, scoring on a wild pitch. JMU added another run in the 2nd after Andrew Ashby doubled in a run to give the Millers a 2-0 lead. Paris JC got on the board in the 3rd on a single up the middle to bring the score to 2-1 before Noah Watkins hit the Millers first home run of the season to bring the lead back to 2. Gavin LeBlanc gave the team a strong start on the mound, working 6 innings while giving up 4 earned runs.
Paris JC tied the game in the top of the 6th inning a Dylan Schlotterback 2-run home run tied the game at 3-3. Paris JC broke the game open in the 7th inning, scoring 4 runs and taking a commanding 7-3 lead, which would ultimately be the final score. The Dragons were led on the mound by Puckett who would get the win in relief after working 4 innings and giving up just 1 run to finish the game.
Paris Junior College took game one 7-3 in 7 innings.
GAME 2 - The second game of the day was a pitcher's dual from end to end. The game was scoreless until the 5th inning when Trevor Durr got the Millers on the board with a solo home run to right field to give them a 1-0 lead. Four batters later, JMU would extend that lead after Shilon Christmas hit a ground ball to score JT Teuton and give the Millers a 2-0 lead. Paris JC would tie the game with runs in the 6th and 7th innings before the Millers were able to take a 3-2 lead thanks to a Taylor Walters RBI in the bottom of the 7th. This would end up being the game-winning run.
Pitching led the way for both teams throughout this game. Peyton Ford started the game for JMU and was able to work 5 innings, giving up just 1 earned run. Freshman Dane Mallon made his college debut for the Millers, working his way out of a two runners on a no-out jam. Brandon Duraso got his first win of the season after throwing a scoreless inning, and Willy Flynn got his first save of the season after closing out the game with 2 innings pitched and no runs allowed. The Dragons were led on the mound by their starter Carson Blakeley who worked 5 innings, giving up 2 earned runs.
John Melvin University took game two 3-2 in 9 innings.
Game 3 of the series will take place Sunday at 12:00 PM.
